IFA 2024 – Intel Introduces Core Ultra 200V Chips, Exceeding ARM in Efficiency and Performance for Laptops

Intel has launched its latest AI processors, the Core Ultra 200V series, just before the Internationale Funkausstellung (IFA) event. These processors, known as “Lunar Lake,” are said to be the most efficient x86 processors Intel has ever made. These chips were first hinted at during Computex in Taiwan earlier this year. The processors will power more than 80 different Windows laptops from brands like Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo, LG, MSI, and Samsung. Pre-orders are available now, and the laptops will hit the market on September 24 in selected regions.

Starting in November, laptops with the Core Ultra 200V series will also get Copilot+ PC AI features.

Intel’s Michelle Johnston Holthaus, Executive Vice President and General Manager of the Client Computing Group, highlighted that these new processors are setting a new standard in mobile AI and graphics. Intel aims to offer consumers an AI-enhanced PC experience without any compromises, thanks to partnerships with software vendors and device manufacturers.

These new processors are a significant upgrade from the Intel Core Ultra 100 series, boasting up to 50% less power usage and up to 120 TOPS (Tera Operations Per Second) performance. This means over 300 AI features can now be accelerated.

The Intel Core Ultra 200V series uses a new CPU core design, featuring four high-performance cores (P-core) and four energy-efficient cores (E-cores). The integrated Intel Arc GPU, which uses Xe 2 graphics technology, can support up to three 4K monitors and provides excellent gaming performance.

Intel has introduced nine new processors in the Core Ultra 200V series, with the Intel Core Ultra 9 processor 288V as the flagship model. This top-tier chip features a clock speed of up to 5.1 GHz and comes with 32 GB of built-in RAM. Since these laptops don’t allow RAM upgrades, Intel ensures they offer at least 16 GB of RAM.

Intel claims that laptops with the Core Ultra 200V processors offer three times the performance per thread, up to 80% better peak performance, and up to 20 hours of battery life during productivity tasks. The Core Ultra 9 2988V processor is said to outperform rivals like AMD Ryzen HX 370, Snapdragon X Elite X1E-78100, and even Apple’s M3, all while using less power.

A laptop with a 72Whr battery and powered by the Core Ultra 9 2988V can last up to 14 hours when running productivity apps and up to 9.5 hours on Microsoft Teams, beating similar laptops powered by AMD Ryzen HX 370 and Snapdragon X Elite X1E-78100.

When it comes to gaming, the Xe2 graphics on the Core Ultra 200V chip deliver 16% more frames per second (FPS) compared to the AMD Ryzen HX 370 and 68% better performance than the Snapdragon X Elite X1E-78100. In fact, Intel stated that more than 28 games wouldn’t even start on Snapdragon X Elite-powered laptops.

Intel also announced the Evo edition of the Core Ultra 200V series. These processors are designed to enhance the laptop experience, offering cooler and quieter performance, quick responsiveness with instant-on and authentication in 1.5 seconds or less, and longer battery life. The Evo edition also includes features like built-in security, Wi-Fi 7 connectivity, Thunderbolt Share support, instant wake, and fast charging that provides 4.5 hours or more of battery life from a 30-minute charge.
