Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 4 Review

Sennheiser has long been synonymous with top-tier audio accessories, and this rings true in my experience with the Sennheiser Accentum Plus headphones and now, the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 4. While the resemblance to its predecessors is noticeable, Sennheiser assures us of over a dozen enhancements and cutting-edge technologies incorporated into these new TWS earphones. Let’s delve into these improvements and assess the performance of the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 4.

Design and Comfort

Staying true to its lineage, the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 4 adopts a design reminiscent of its predecessor, the True Wireless 3. The distinguishing features include a glossy surface atop each bud and a variety of color options. I received the Metallic Silver variant, which initially impresses but is prone to staining. Opting for the Graphite Black or Black Copper variant might be a wise decision if you’re wary of such issues.

The Momentum True Wireless 4 does have a slightly bulkier build compared to its counterparts, such as the Sony WF-1000 XM5, which could pose a challenge in portability, particularly when stowed in pockets. Additionally, the earbuds protrude more from the ears than most in-ear TWS models, potentially causing discomfort when lying down with your head against a pillow.

However, once you adjust, the fit is commendable. The buds feature soft silicone tips and ear fins, ensuring a secure fit without the fear of them slipping off. While it may take some time to get accustomed to the ear fins, they offer customization options to cater to individual preferences. Moreover, with IP54 dust and splash resistance certification, these buds are built to withstand various weather conditions, a notable improvement over their predecessors.

Functionality and Features

Despite lacking a dedicated pairing button, the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 4 can be paired with multiple devices simultaneously via the Smart Control app. The app, available for both Android and iOS, offers seamless functionality with an intuitive interface, allowing users to customize EQ settings and touch controls to their liking. Furthermore, features like sound zones adapt settings based on your location, enhancing the overall user experience.

In addition to robust app support, the Momentum True Wireless 4 boasts low latency mode, a responsive touch surface, lossless audio, and other premium features expected from high-end TWS earphones. However, the wear detection feature may require refinement, as it occasionally fails to resume music after reinserting the buds.

Audio Quality and Noise Cancellation

The 7mm drivers of the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 4 deliver a balanced sound profile out of the box, catering to purists with clean vocals and ample bass. While the default settings align with most preferences, the option to adjust EQ settings provides flexibility for those craving more bass. Supported by Qualcomm’s S5 Sound Gen 2 chipset with Snapdragon Sound, the buds offer detailed audio reproduction, though certain high-res audio features are limited to specific devices and streaming services.

Regarding active noise cancellation (ANC), the Momentum True Wireless 4 features adaptive ANC, which adjusts to environmental factors to minimize disturbances. While effective in most scenarios, it may not match the superior noise cancellation capabilities of competitors like the Sony WF-1000 XM5.

Battery Life and Call Quality

The battery life of the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 4 is commendable, offering up to 30 hours of playback time with noise cancellation disabled. Fast Qi wireless charging ensures convenience, with short charging durations providing extended playtime. Moreover, the inclusion of a ‘Battery Protection Mode’ helps maintain battery health over time.

In terms of call quality, the earbuds’ microphones, aided by AI voice pickup, deliver clear audio, albeit with some room for improvement in noisy environments.

Verdict

In summary, the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 4 presents an enticing option for audiophiles seeking premium wireless earbuds. Despite minor drawbacks such as bulkier design and occasional wear detection issues, its impressive sound quality, comfortable fit, and advanced features make it a compelling choice. While competitors like the Sony WF-1000 XM5 may excel in certain aspects, the Momentum True Wireless 4 holds its own with its adaptive ANC, exceptional battery life, and dependable app support.
